The Guardians of Art
The historical and cultural heritage of cities are not only found in books. Museums play a critical role in documenting a society’s irreplaceable artistic manifestations: protecting, conserving, researching, communicating and exhibiting the artistic and cultural heritage of countries and their communities and promoting the study and appreciation of arts and sciences.
In 1977, the United Nations declared May 18 as International Museum Day, although the value and importance of such institutions can never be fully appreciated in a single date on the calendar. For travelers, visiting a museum is an extraordinary opportunity to get to know and appreciate the cultural variety and richness of a society. If your current trip takes you to a particular city for the first time, chances are you have a visit planned to a museum of interest. If you are going to Mexico City, for example, don’t miss the opportunity to go to the Museo Nacional de Antropología de México (National Museum of Anthropology), one of the largest in the world, which contains extensive archeological artifacts of the pre-Columbian cultures of Mesoamerica. If your visit takes you to Buenos Aires, the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano (Malba) houses hundreds of paintings from eminent artists like Diego Rivera, Roberto Matta and Wifredo Lam. During your stay in São Paulo you will
surely want to visit the magnificent Museo de Arte (MASP), which possesses the most important collection of Western art in Latin America. Visiting Bogotá? You can’t say you’ve truly visited the Colombian capital if you haven’t been to the Museo del Oro (Gold), one of the most fascinating museums in the world where you’ll find priceless riches of local origin.
Bon voyage!
